Tuesday Tutorial #11

This week design team member Melinda Miller created a cute little canvas project to share, inspired by famed She Art doll designer Christy Tomlinson... you're gonna love this!

 Here's Melinda:

Paper Collection:    Bo Bunny – Mama-Razzi3 Canvas  (Inspired by Christy Tomlinson)

Supplies:

Papers used from the collection: Mama Razzi ·         Oh-Snap ·         Combo Stickers Foundation Papers ·         French Text patterned paper ·         Tags ·         Book pages

Other Materials: 8 x 10 canvas Acrylic Paint Modeling paste Ranger Archival Inks (Black & Sepia) Faber Castel Big Brush Pens (assorted) Faber Castel Pitt Pen (Black) Pigma Graphic (Micron pen) Glue Pen

Gel medium Assorted acrylic stamps Wood stamps Paper Doily Glitter Punchinella Drywall tape Bubble wrap Scraper

 

 

Instructions:
 Layer 1.  Smooth a layer of gel medium onto the canvas and layer down torn book pages, tags, paper doily and vintage papers.  Cover the papers with another layer of gel medium.  Let Dry.

 

 

Layer 2.  Add paint.  Scrape paint down the canvas in different color randomly.  Let dry.

 

Layer 3.   I tinted the modeling paste with paint and scraped it down from the upper left corner. While still wet, I gently used bubble wrap to create a texture within the modeling paste.  Let Dry.

 

 

Layer 4.  Add more texture.  Texture was created by using stamps, bubble wrap, ink, paint, punchinella.   Note that stamps do not have to come out perfectly - partial images are just fine!

            Techniques

1.      Using a brush, paint onto the bubble wrap and then use like a stamp.

2.      Swipe the drywall tape across an ink pad (make sure to use archival or staz-on inks so they won’t smear when you apply more gel medium) Use again like stamp in random places

3.      Use Acrylic stamps in random places(again always using archival inks)

Layer 5:  (GIRL) cut a head and leg shapes from book paper.  Cut skirt from patterned paper and cut another piece to use as a bottom layer.  In this case I used a sticker from the “Combo Sticker Sheet”.   Cut a shirt from another coordinating sheet of paper.  Cut wings out or as in this case I used a butterfly as wings.

 

Layer your girl down to set the best position for her.  Once you have that arranged, lay down a layer of gel medium and lay down the pieces for your girl.  Lay down another coat of gel medium over the girl.  Let dry.

Layer 6: Next step is to color the face and legs a flesh tone.  Let dry.  Paint on hair in color of your choice.  Let Dry.  With the Micron pen, texturize the hair and draw in your face shape.  To create curls, doodle them in. 

 

Layer 7: Lay down your quote with layers of gel medium.  Let dry.  (Note how I first used wax paper to make sure my letters would fit, then transferred the stickers to the canvas...)

 

 

 

 

Layer 8: This is the final step.  Add more detail with a doodle pen and/or stamps.  Outline to make the image and text pop off the page.
