The 12 Tags of December

It is finally here, the project you have all been asking about.

The 12 Tags of December

Each day for the first 12 days in December Michelle will be creating a new tag
and then the elves will be making a limited number of kits.

The directions and all the supplies for the tag will be in baskets on the back table for you to sit and recreate these technique filled holiday tags.  It is like a mini class but at your own pace and on your own schedule.

But be aware once the kits for that tag are gone, they are gone!

Never fear, if you call and pay for the tags that you want then we can hold the kit for you.
So you can come in anytime it is convenient during the month of December to make your tags.
This is the tag for the 1st of December
Poinsettia Wishes

You can check the blog and facebook each day for the latest tag.
Each tag costs $12 and includes all supplies
If you do not live locally but still want to make the tags we have two options for you:
1.  We will have PDF instructions with full color photos, step by step directions and a list of supplies used for $5.  You can pay for these via Paypal and we will email you a pdf file.
2.  Purchase a kit with the diecuts, metals and pieces used along with an email of the PDF instructions.  This option is $12 which includes shipping (none of the paints, inks, etc are included in this kit) or $10 without shipping

Art Journal Courage - Eight chapters full of prompts, step by step, techniques which are followed by luscious art work.  Dina even shows you that you can draw.
Discover the techniques and courage you need to journal bravely! With Dina's help, you'll begin by working through any fears you have of using your own handwriting. You'll get journaling prompts and techniques to help you develop a handwriting style you'll love and words you'll want to write! Then, you'll move onto drawing: you'll learn not only how to train your hand, but also how to appreciate your own unique drawing ability. As you continue through the eight chapters, you will learn additional mixed-media techniques to help you overcome your fears of new materials, using photos of yourself, creating layers, working without a plan and much more.

Nathalie Kalback is coming back to ESS

we are so excited for our friend Nathalie Kalbach, she was just named Brand Ambassador for Liquitex
Nathalie is a self-taught mixed media artist. She was born in Germany and lived most of her adult life in Hamburg before moving to the United States in September 2013. She now lives in Jersey City, NJ.
Nathalie describes herself:
"My early love of paint was squelched by an art teacher who told me I had no talent. I worked as a paralegal for seventeen years and might have remained in the wrong profession had I not discovered mixed media painting in 2004.
I regained confidence in my creativity and have spent the last decade exploring the possibilities of creating dimension and texture by layering different materials and paint media. I have worked in art journals, on canvases and scrapbook layouts, incorporating collage and found objects. My projects have been published in several craft and hobby magazines as well as mixed media books. I have taught at many retail events and art retreats, as well as at trade shows, and by 2011 I was able to give up working as a paralegal to become a full-time artist.
For me, creating art is a dialogue between my skills and the supplies I use. It is not so much a battle as an ongoing attempt to work out the connections between ideas and techniques.
In my mixed media canvases I emphasize urban subject matter, especially gentrification. I depict the vibrancy as well as the decay that I see in the cities around me from multiple viewpoints, represented by layering and tactile dimension.
I believe that everyone can be creative. Since 2006 I have taught workshops in Europe, Canada, the U.S., Australia, Israel, Malaysia and online. I share what I know about tools, supplies and techniques, with the goal of helping each student unlock his/her personal creativity.
My artwork is licensed through StencilGirl Products (stencils) and Stampendous (rubber stamp and template sets). My work has been featured on the packaging for Liquitex Acrylic Painting Sets sold at Michaels art and craft stores. Since September 2014 I am a sponsored artist/brand ambassador for Liquitex. I am also a product development consultant to several art and craft supply manufacturers."
Nathalie is teaching three fantastic workshops on November 14th, 15th and 16th

Check our calendar for her mixed media classes .  Descriptions, times and supplies needed are listed there.
Don't delay in signing up as we are at a "Wait List Only" for the Sunday class

To Market to Market to Buy a Fresh...

Actually, I’m not talking about going TO the market, I’m talking about going a little lower than that – as in Studio Calico’s new South of Market paper line.  I have to admit it – I’m a bit of a foodie.  I love collecting and trying new recipes, and one of my favorite paper craft pastimes is making recipe books and cards to share.  Enter South of Market, an awesome line we just got in from Studio Calico.

River Cottage River Cottage

I love the colors and images in this super cute farm fresh line – and, not that it probably matters to anyone but me, but it also has some super cute paper names.  I mean, Lettuce Turnip the Beet – how cute is that???

So, whether you’re creating recipe books of your own, scrapbooking favorite memories in your grandma’s cooking, or making amazing farm themed altered projects, South of Market is perfect!

We're All Mad Here....

You know, I think every store should have a motto, don’t you?  We got a new line of paper in recently that reminded me of a quote.. the perfect quote for our store, really.

amadteapartyYup, we’re all mad here.  Perfect description, wouldn’t you say?

Case in point: The other day I came into the store and was informed I would be unable to use the bathroom.  This was because UPN (as in Use-to-be Perfect Nancy) changed the lock on the bathroom door to an “easy open” lock so we wouldn’t have to worry about losing the key anymore.

However, good old UPN neglected to test the lock before she installed it.  After she installed the new handle and closed the door she decided to test it.  You know how this story goes, right?  Yup, the door was locked.  As in permanently.  The whole time I was there Michelle and UPN were trying to open the door.  First they tried removing the hinges, but the door wouldn’t budge.

Nancy3 nancy4

Next, they tried to pick the lock with credit cards, but apparently none of the cards had a high enough credit line to open that golden door.  They even tried laying on the floor with a hanger and a mirror to try to unlock the door from the other side.  When things got desperate they tried some sort of native rain dance, although I have to say this wasn’t it brightest idea given that none of us had access to the bathroom and all that chanting was really making us feel like we needed to make it rain, if you know what I mean.

nancy2

You know, Alice had a “drink me” bottle to grow larger, and an “eat me” cake to grow smaller, but despite all the eating we did that day there was no magic confection that opened that door.  You know how in Alice in Wonderland Alice tries to fool the Red Queen by painting the roses red?  Well apparently Nancy was inspired to paint the door blue to calm Michelle’s fragile nerves, but alas, the door remained locked.

Finally Michelle broke down and called a locksmith.  He said UPN did a great installing the new lock except for one thing – the lock was broken.  Really broken.  Even he was unable to fix it.  There wasn’t anything they could have done to make it unlock.  Yup, just another crazy day at ESS….

Anyway, as you might have guessed. the new line of papers I was referring to above is all about…. Alice in Wonderland!  Always a popular theme, I really love the way KaiserCraft pulled it together in their Through the Looking Glass line:

KaiserCraft Looking Glass

Through the Looking Glass - Wonderland Die Cut Through the Looking Glass – Wonderland Die Cut

Through the Looking Glass - Alice Through the Looking Glass – Alice

Through the Looking Glass - Cheshire Cat Through the Looking Glass – Cheshire Cat

Through the Looking Glass - March Hare Through the Looking Glass – March Hare

Through the Looking Glass - Tweedle Dee Through the Looking Glass – Tweedle Dee

Through the Looking Glass - Tweedle Dum Through the Looking Glass – Tweedle Dum

Through the Looking Glass - White Rabbit Through the Looking Glass – White Rabbit

Through the Looking Glass - Drink Me Acetate Through the Looking Glass – Drink Me Acetate

Some come take you’re own trip through the rabbit hole and see what awaits you on the other side of the door at ESS… the tea is waiting!
