Tuesday Tutorial #13

This week ESS Design Team member Melinda Miller shows us how to create an adorable layout incorporating three dimensional roses, a lot of vintage elements, and Authentique's Cherish collection - so sweet!  Here's Melinda's tutorial:

 

Paper Collection:    Authentique - Cherish

Supplies:

Papers used from the collection: Cherish ·         Cherish One ·         Cherish Two ·         Cherish Enhancements ·         Cherish Components ·         Bazzill – Yellow ·         Bazzill Green

Other Materials: Pop Dots Zots Paper doily  Pink/Green Striped Satin Ribbon Dylusions Ink Spray  - Fresh Lime Radiant Rain Spray - Ice Distress Inks - Antique Linen,           Victorian Velvet, Wild Honey Bling: Borders, swirls, leaf

Instructions:
 

Layer 1.  I chose to use the Cherish One as my background.  I sprayed a paper doily Dylusions Spray in lime, and then with Luminarte "ice" spray;  I cut it in half; I then adhered it to the center of the right side of the layout (see photo above of finished layout - the doily looks sort of like leaves behind the flowers...).  Photo sizes are a standard 4 x 6.  Mat sizes for photos are 4.25 x 6.25.  I arranged both photos in the center of the layout as shown above; the top photo is mounted on pop dots.  

 

Layer 2:  Cut decorative borders with a die cut machine, decorative scissors, or decorative border punches using both sides of Cherish Two.  These should be about 7" long and around 3/4" wide.  Distress the edges with Tim Holtz Antique Linen.  Top border was adhered with pop dots and bottom border with tape runner.

Layer 3: Create a third border using the pink side of Cherish Two; this one should be about 8" wide and 2 1/2" wide with a decorative edge on the bottom.   Distress edges with Antique Linen.  Adhere from right side of layout about 1" up from bottom.  Cut pink/green striped satin ribbon a bit longer than the bottom border, about 9"; cut end in inverted triangle.  Adhere with tape runner from right side of layout about 1/2" above the decorative edge of the wide border.  From the Enhancements cut-apart sheet I used the rose border and accordion folded it about every 1/2", adhering it down just a bit above the ribbon.  Adhere bling border just below accordion folded strip as shown.

Layer 4:  I hand-rolled roses that were cut with my die machine; you can use a floral die such as the Tim Holtz Tattered Florals die to achieve a similar effect.  Begin by gently folding the petals of center flowers around a quill tool or stylus as shown below until a rose center is created; gradually add more layers of folded flowers around the center piece until desired effect is achieved.  I distressed the edges with Tim Holtz, Victorian Velvet.  

Layer 5: Cut swirls in green to accent flowers and add leaves, both handcut and premade - whatever you have in your stash that will work.  Add flourish and rhinestone bling.

Layer 6:  Added embellishments from the Enhancements sheet as desired to complete your layout.

Thanks to Melinda for another beautiful layout - I love the rolled flowers and accordion-folded border... it's those little touches that can really make a layout something special!

Paper Artsy Stamps

You might remember back in February we got in an exciting new collection of Fresco paints from Paper Artsy.... if not, here's a quick look back at that post.

Well, for those of you who quickly became Paper Artsy converts, we just got in some of their super cool and funky stamps!

More About Colors...

A few weeks back I did a little post on picking paper to match your photos, and I thought I'd do a little more today.  This is one of the most common questions we get... how to match paper to photos.

Of course, the easiest route is by theme, which is so easy to do in a scrapbook store!  Got photos from Alaska?  We've got some Alaska paper.  Got birthday party photos?  We've got several lines of birthday paper.

But maybe you don't want to focus on the theme... the next best way to showcase your photos is to focus on colors.  Take a look at the following random photos that I downloaded from the internet:

OK, well, when I look at these pictures, I see a few different color elements, so I might start looking for some browns:

 

A yellow... not to bright, kind of a soft gold:

 A little orange:

 A blue/green... this is a little different in each picture, but this should work:

 An olive green:

 And a nice neutral:

Look at that... we created a color palette :)  Now from there you can pick the colors you think should be the dominant colors, which ones you can use for matting so that your pictures will pop, which ones you want to use for accents...

You can also start looking for matching patterned papers... look how these patterns reinforce those same colors:

I love that chevron pattern at the top - the first picture of the room would look so cool with that pattern!

Incidentally, in case you haven't noticed, I kind of worked backwards here... I found pictures that matched the colors already put together in a color line.  That was just for ease of blogging.... it works easily well going the other way :)
